Digitallay Colorized Photograph of the Tongsa Penlop Ugyen Wangchuk taken by John Claude White in 1905.

Photograph of the Tongsa Penlop Ugyen Wangchuk taken by John Claude White in 1905. Ugyen Wangchuk was a key player in the politics of Bhutan in the early 20th century. In the 19th century, Bhutan and the British in India had clashed over the control of the duars or passes into eastern India. The hostilities ended when the British and Bhutan signed the Treaty of Sinchula. By the late 19th century, power centered upon the Penlops of Paro and Tongsa.

The Younghusband Mission of 1904, set up to negotiate with the Tibetans, passed through Bhutan. The Penlop of Paro remained aloof while the Penlop of Tongsa assisted the mission. He accompanied the mission to Tibet and played an important role as mediator, using the long-established ties between Tibet and Bhutan to help the British negotiate a favorable agreement. Bhutan now operated firmly within the British sphere of influence and Ugyen Wangchuk was popular after his role as mediator with both the British and the Bhutanese. This resulted in the foundation of the hereditary monarchy of Bhutan when Ugyen Wangchuk was elected King of Bhutan in 1907.

THE KING WHO SACRIFICES EVERYTHING FOR HIS PEOPLE

Nowhere in the world, exist a king like him, and nowhere in the world, the people are blessed like Bhutanese. We are spared from every difficulty that the rest of the world goes through. All the difficulties and challenges are taken by our selfless king. He is the king who sacrifices everything for his people.

During the coronation,  His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck  said the following lines;

"Throughout my reign, I will never rule you as a King. I will protect you as a parent, care for you as a brother and serve you as a son. I shall give you everything and keep nothing; I shall live such a life as a good human being that you may find it worthy to serve as an example for your children; I have no personal goals other than to fulfill your hopes and aspirations. I shall always serve, day and night, in the spirit of kindness, justice, and equality.” Thank you, Your Majesty, beyond words.

On the joyous occasion of the 41st birthday of our king, I join the nation to express my unconditional love and respect to His Majesty. I would like to extend my wholehearted sincere prayers for His Majesty's good health and eternal happiness. Long Live Your Majesty.

Celebrating 500 years of Pema Lingpa's Legacy

Today, the 3rd day of the 1st Lunar month is Pema Lingpa Day. It is the 500th anniversary of Guru Rinpoche’s very own heart son and a great Bhutanese Terton (treasure discoverer)

The death anniversary of Terton Pema Lingpa had been observed every year on the third day of the first month of the lunar calendar since he passed away in 1521. Last year (2020), for the first time, it is being officially observed as Pema Lingpa day. Pawo Chonying Dorji was the person who proposed to the government to mark the day officially.

All the Bhutanese should remember our great treasure discoverer and mark the day as an auspicious occasion.

Happy Pema Lingpa Day!

Yeshi Lhendup Flims need less than 6000 subscribers to hit 100,000 subscribers

Yeshi Lhendup Flims, the leading music video and entertainment house in Bhutan just need about 5900 subscribers to hit 100,000 to get the silver play button from YouTube.

The founder and owner, Yeshi Lhendup is an exemplary youth and one of the leading YouTubers in Bhutan. He has had a passion for filmmaking since his college days. Back then in Sherubtse college, Yeshi tried making films along with his college friends for the college film festivals. Yeshi was motivated to venture into filmmaking after the success of the short films he and his friends have produced while in college.  To realize his dream of becoming a filmmaker, Yeshi neither appeared for his RCSC examination nor sat for any job interviews but he was determined to work in creative media to showcase his passion for audiovisual production. Before he began his own business, Yeshi worked for few firms to gain experience. While working for a film production firm MPC Bhutan Entertainment, Yeshi has not only created audio-visual and graphic works but also sang a patriotic song “Miwang Gyalsey” produced by MPC Bhutan Entertainment. The song was dedicated to the birth of The Crown Prince. Yeshi sang the patriotic song along with Cheki Lhamo (aka Lha Dorji) during the 2nd Peling Tshechu in Kuenselphodrang, Thimphu in the presence of Their Majesties The Druk Gyalpo, The Fourth Druk Gyalpo, and members of the Royal family. Yeshi’s first music video was “La Nye Ngam” that he has produced in 2017. He then went on to produce about fifty-seven music videos. Yeshi Lhendup owns his own audio-visual production house by the name of Yeshi Lhendup Films and is well known for producing music videos on Bhutanese songs that we get to see on his YouTube channel.

Let's help the talented young man to reach 100,000 subscribers on YouTube as soon as possible.

One of the e-Sport (PUBG) stories in Bhutan_from Humans of Thimphu Page

“8 years ago I fell from a two-story building and cracked open the back of my head. The doctors said that if I got injured again, I would not make it. I had to be extra careful and couldn’t go out to play like the other kids. My father bought me a gaming console to keep me company. I started playing Mario and Pac-man, then Clash of Clans and Mobile Legends. 6 years later, I got into PUBG. My friends and I formed Clans and participated in various tournaments. With time, I got extremely good at it and became fairly popular in the gaming community. This helped get me an invitation from a clan called B2B. They were one of the best ones out there and I was thrilled.

I live to stream my games now. There are usually about 100-200 viewers and if they’re impressed with my gaming, they send money or data packages. Those watching from the US send ‘stars’. Each star translates to 0.01 USD and I received up to 16,000 stars once. If we play well, we are appreciated. The Bhutanese community also organizes tournaments with prizes ranging from 15,000 to 30,000 ngultrum. My friends and I have applied for an international tournament called ‘PMCO’ and we train constantly. If we can position in the top 32, we will get the opportunity to travel and also to win attractive cash prizes. Gaming, for me, is so much more than just a hobby. I enjoy it a lot and also make an income from it. I try to balance my studies and gaming so my parents also understand and support me. With time, it could be possible to earn a living through gaming. It is important to keep improving gaming skills and take on live streaming.

I haven’t played a physical sport since I got injured. When I see others playing, I miss it but I am embarrassed because I am no longer competent in those fields. I don’t socialize much either. But I have made some wonderful friends in the gaming community and am known as the B2B Giant in my gaming world. Despite all the limitations, I have been able to find my place. Everyone should follow their passion and do whatever makes them happy.”

Penzogyem (Pelzom Gyem) Drupchu, the holy water of Pelzom Gyem

Penzogyem Drupchu (also called Pelzom Gyem Drupchu ) is 16 km towards Thimphu from Wangdue. It's at Thrinleygang in Punakha Dzongkhang.

One of my friends (Kinzang Chogyal ) and I visited the site coinciding with Losar, the new year in the lunar calendar. We heard about the site from a taxi driver when he drove us to our new home.

We planned to visit and fetch some holy water. As we journeyed towards the site we expected someone to be there to give us some details about the site.

We reached there, fetched the holy water, washed up, met people, and collected the trashes that littered the site. An hour passed, many people visited but no one could tell us the detail about the site.

Now we are planning to ask some local people and hear from them. We are looking forward to hearing the most accurate story of the site. We will also put up a small poster of the story as a reference for the visitors.

Please comment, if you know more about the site. Share to reach more people.

No, I will not,” he said. “I will not mislead the nation. It is not a political game or to show others how courageous I am. WEIGHING THE TWO MEANS OF TEACHINHG AND LEARNING

More than ever, due to pandemic, COVID19, most of the countries including Bhutan were forced to carry on online means of teaching and learning. Correspondingly, people realized the importance of real learning, the face to face method of teaching and learning in a classroom. Learning online or virtual learning is a good idea, but it cannot replace classroom lessons. Conventional classroom education sounds older than virtual learning, but it is still the best way of teaching and learning. On the other hand, virtual learning may prove people to be moving with time but it cannot cater to all the purposes of education. Therefore; online education may not be as good as conventional classroom education. Online classrooms may not be an effective method in inducing interpersonal growth in their students. It may also contribute to time factors and objective forms of assessment.

Online education cannot be as good as conventional classroom education because the virtual nature of class will affect the interpersonal skills development of students. Besides content knowledge, educational institutions like schools and colleges are the place where students develop their interpersonal skills. Skills like respecting elders, caring for younger ones, and talking nicer, are mostly learned in schools and colleges. The more a student interacts with friends and teachers (or other staff), the more they pick those skills. However, studying from home through virtual platforms hinder those interactions and retard interpersonal skills development. As the trend of online education expands, professors have questioned whether an online education provides students with the proper development of interpersonal relationships and social skills (Allen & Seaman, 2011 as cited in Lindsey, 2015). This makes it evident that online teaching and learning, not reliable methods.

Online classes make students procrastinate more frequently. Some argue that online class is less time consuming than real class (Life Long Learning, 2017). However, online classes do not have instructors hounding students to stay on task. This makes the students go complacent with their academics. Moreover, online classes have to rely on fundamental attributes like electricity, internet connectivity, and management of time. Uncertainty of power feed is related to the decimation of teachers as well as students’ time and efforts. The difference in the strength of internet connectivity products to learning gaps among the students. The setting of the online classes is usually at home which makes students face challenges to manage time between chores at home and studies. Therefore, students have more reasons to procrastinate assignments and homework while learning online.

Assessment is another obstruction commencing the online teaching and learning process. One may claim that online teaching can be a benefit in providing assessment in diverse geographical areas (TestReach, 2012). On the contrary, the assessment becomes unfair. The actual abilities of the students cannot be justified through online assessments. This is solely linked to unfair means such as copying. Furthermore, the students’ participation in the academic forums cannot be a reliable source to draw correct inferences of student’s potential. Attesting to the veracity of this view, Rastogi, and Bhardwaj (2020) have interpreted that online classes and its affiliated assessments lack transparency since most of the works from the students can be plagiarised. Consequently, it does not provide a well-grounded trend of student’s learning progress. This scaffolds the inefficacy of online classrooms.

The advancements in the teaching and learning process with modern technology have been acknowledged around the globe. However, it has not been effective in serving purposes like the conventional teaching method. Its drawbacks include not being able to bring about interpersonal skills development. The virtual environment provides fewer platforms for students to interact with each other. It also results in ineffective management of time, and unjustified assessments. Education is advancing with the introduction of sophisticated technologies. Yet, the conventional method of teaching and learning remains an irreplaceable means of teaching and learning built since time immemorial.

Relating physics with everyday life: The Echo

No cliff echoes without a source of the sound. With required conditions, all cliffs echoes. This simple phenomenon has many functions that may extend beyond one's knowledge. The strength of the sound source is the weakness of the cliff and the weakness of the sound source is the strength of the cliff.

The sound source has its own ability to produce sounds but a cliff cannot produce sounds of its own. Though a cliff is disabled of producing sounds of its own, it never fails to throw back the echo. If both the sound source and cliff are personified, one can learn a valuable lesson.

At times, in one's life, another person would always try to blame for any kind of deteriorating factors in relationships (family, friends, workmates, etc) and take the credits for strengthening the same. When one's ego wins, he/she would start to say that another person is; not calling, not texting in social media, not giving regards, and so on. 'He/she did not talk or greet me first, so I too ignored him/her', is what we hear from egoistic individuals.

In life, one should not always expect others to be the one to approach first to; call, greet, respect, and so on. If one tries to appear first like the sound source, others would always react and respond like the echo from the cliff.

We humans unintentionally or intentionally tend to expect many things from others. If such expectations appear in one's mind, try doing the same expected actions to others.

First E365 champion from Bhutan: The prestigious recognition by the President of SFI.

Strong Future International (SFI) is the number one digital marketing platform with members from all the countries across the globe. There are approximately two thousand members from our country Bhutan at the moment. I became a fully convinced member of SFI on 6th January 2019. I mentioned 'fully convinced member' because in 2018 a friend of mine ( Karma Dorji ) told me about it to me. However, I was not really convinced and quitted it. After six months, I met with my upline from Serbia on Facebook. He is Mr. Bratislav Misic, who is not only an expert in SFI but also an approachable and friendly man. He helped me to understand the SFI platform. Then, I registered for a new account with his guidance.

As a student, I kept my studies on track but also dedicated my free time to SFI as my passion. After eleven long months, I earned quite an appreciable amount of money and also got the Payoneer Mastercard for International payment. Exactly after one year from the day I joined, I was announced as the E365 Entrepreneur Challenge Champion.

Members who are named the E365 Champion of their class receive special corporate recognition, income-boosting CSAs every month from the CSA Rewards program, their name and photo on the E365 "hall of fame" Website, bragging rights, special recognition at the SFI Forum, and a HANDSOME  PLAQUE for their office wall to commemorate their achievement.

I became E365 Champion not only because of my consistent hard work but it is because of the constant support and guidance of my sponsor Mr. Bratislav Misic. I would like to thank him and other supportive uplines for being so supportive.

It's not about being money minded but looking for new opportunities. Yes, I earn an appreciable amount, so you can. Join the lovely digital marketing platform to earn now. Click here to register FREE with SFI.

Sanitary Pads out of stock? No worries: CheChay Sanitary Pad is here.

Kharang and Rice : My mom's creativity.

A friend of mine was sharing about the funny incidences of his pre-primary days. That made me remember my childhood days of years back. Recollecting all those ain't so good enough because it was dominated by bitter things. However, the beautiful part is to remember how my mom used to combat the harsh reality.

One thing I vividly remember is; cooking of Kharang and Rice in a single crucible (pot) without mixing. I do not really get a clue today, why we felt shy to have Kharang in front of others and proud while having rice? I assume that it may be because of the availability of Kharang in the locality and it was tough in those days to get rice (at my village people grow maize as the main food crop). Though both Kharang and rice serve to fill up our bellies, as a kid it was really a weird thing to have Local Kharang in a lunch box.

Beautifully my mom used to wash rice before Kharang and put it in the oven in a pot. After a while, she adds Kharang in the same crucible but won't stir it to prevent it from mixing. After cooking, we used to have the upper layer (Kharang) for breakfast and pack the lower layer (rice) in my lunch box. This is just a small portion to describe the greatness of my mother.

Thank you ama for your sacrifices. Love you so much. Be Healthy and long live dear ama.

The story behind collecting electronic wastes, especially used cartridges and tonners.

I get positive comments and complimentary personal messages, whenever I post about electronic wastes collection. However, I feel that it is not fair if I do not tell the story of how I started with this project and what I get out of it.

I was fortunate to be selected as one of the members of the sixth cohort of YI (Youth Initiative), a program of Bhutan Centre of Media and Democracy. Once, Mr. Leki Dawa,   the CEO of Bhutan Alternatives was invited as a guest speaker to share his life story. That was the first time I saw him and knew about his enterprise. I was really touched by his life story before he became a social entrepreneur.

After the first phase of YI, I called him and told him that I wanted to visit his office. He was openly welcoming me to visit there and told me the location with some reference point (one of the ministry offices). However, I was not really sure about that reference point in those days. I used google map to locate the office but it was not really reliable. I changed three taxis to reach his office. After getting into the office, I was really impressed and inspired to see how the wasted (used) cartridges were being refurbished. Moreover, he had employed many youths there.

Amidst our conversation, I found some similarities between how the two of us were brought up. I then asked him, if he could employ me during vacations to collect those electronic wastes ( especially used cartridges). He promptly agreed and told me that I was the first person (from youth) to approach him in that way. He also added that till that day they collected wastes for free from several Dzongkhags.

After a few minutes, I changed my decision to take that collaboration as one of the projects of our youth team (Kuenphen Youth). That way I thought it would even help my friends ( Kuenphen Youth members) and keep a certain percentage of earnings as a fund of our Youth Organization. I shared that to him and he also agreed to let our team collaborate with Bhutan Alternatives. We signed an agreement of collaboration and agreement of price for wastes items.

To date, we (Kuenphen Youth) covered four Dzongkhags (Mongar, Samtse, Tashigang, and Chukha) to collect the electronic wastes, especially during vacations. We are satisfied with this project for we can earn as well as render our hands in waste management in a small way. Moreover, we are keeping 20% of earnings as a fund of our team.

Personally, I am happy that my approach became an opportunity for my friends to earn with me ( provided they are interested). In a way, I just want to convey and clarify to everyone that we are not doing it for free. If people think that we are doing this for free, it is not at all fair for Bhutan Alternatives. So it is all because of Bhutan Alternatives that we were able to pick up and sustain with this project.

While we go for collection from government offices and some private sectors, most of the people tell us that they already dumped or burned those used cartridges (and other electronic waste items). We are late for dumped ones but it is better to be late than not doing at all. We are gaining momentum with this project and hope to cover more districts.

I personally as a founder of Kuenphen Youth, would like to thank all individuals who helped us to bring the status of our project to this extend.
